Wagner FLEXiO 590 HVLP Paint Sprayer – How It Stacks Up
If you are looking for a budget-priced DIY paint sprayer then the Wagner flexio 590 paint sprayer may just be what you are looking for. The Wagner flexio is a very handy sprayer that is ideal for a wide variety of small and mid-sized projects from furniture items to walls and fences. This Wagner Flexio 590 review is based on my own use and testing of the sprayer in my workshop and small business, plus from other users around the web both professional painters and DIYers.
Having been used to using brushes and rollers on smaller projects and an airless sprayer for the bigger jobs, I found I was in need of something in between the two methods. After some deliberation and online research, I decided the Wagner flexio was the way to go, a good quality paint sprayer, not too expensive, a popular brand name, and good overall user reviews were the kickers.
I now find I have more uses for the Wagner 590 than I originally intended. The 590 actually comes with two different-sized spray assemblies that connect to the main sprayer unit which pumps air at the speed you set. The smaller detail unit is suitable for small projects and a larger ispray unit to tackle larger jobs such as fences or walls. There is a small learning curve that is easy to get up to speed with and normal for any new power tool. More on settings and use later.
When compared to using say a roller for painting, I find the setup time for the Flexio is pretty much the same, however, I have to say cleaning the Wagner 590 is quicker, uses less water (for water-based paints), and is less messy than properly cleaning any mid-sized paint roller

The Wagner Flexio 590 is really easy to use for the DIY’er but the results are surprisingly professional for the price. The user is given a very smooth experience as it is very well balanced and lightweight for any handyman or handywoman to handle. It can be held for a long time without hand spasms. It is faster and better than the previous models of handheld HVLP sprayers. The flexio 590 will spray both water-based Latex and Oil-based paints, the latter requiring mineral spirits for thinning and cleaning.
The original Wagner type of paint sprayers was noisy and finicky to use, the Spraytech 590 has changed the game and is now one of the best sellers on Amazon. well balanced weight
iSpray Nozzle: This amazing sprayer comes with an i-spray nozzle which improves the spraying pattern. It sprays larger areas by keeping the paint completely concentrated in the desired places.
Detail Finisher: The Flexio 590 model comes with a detail finishing sprayer which helps give your work a professional look on timber and metal projects. The smaller lighter weight nozzle can also be used to complete a detailed finish on a variety of smaller projects such as handicrafts or furniture.
The Quart Cup: The 1-1/2 attached Quart cup on the larger sprayer unit can be used to paint a 10’X 12’ wall in just a single application. Filling the cup is just as easy as filling a paint tray.
X Boost Turbine: The two-speed turbine assists you in the coating of a paint project. The boost turbine makes sure that the paint is neither too thin nor too thick. It balances the amount of paint used on each wall. Using the two-speed settings you can adjust the thickness of the paint and the coating speed. This is an ideal function as getting the correct paint consistency in a sprayer can be sometimes tricky.
Width Selector: Using the amazing Flexio 590, you can also adjust the material flow of the paint applied. You decide the range of the paint spray pattern you need. It can be selected to be wide, narrow, or something in between. By defining the range, you decide the spray painting area and the thickness layer too. This is helpful where you require some precision in the work being done.
Speed Control: Unlike the conventional tools used for painting, you can decide the speed of your painting with just a touch. A Flexio spray paint gun comes with several speed options, different for each model. The WagnerFlex 590 has air speed options from 1 to 10 and you can change them according to your comfort and type of work. If you want to minimize the drips as little as possible then start low, but increase it with your working mode type.
Coverage: Depending on location, the FLEXiO 590 is almost 8 times faster than the normal brush. It guarantees coverage of 8’ x 10’ in just a minute for stains and a 5 minute period for latex paints. It can spray up to 8.0 Gallons per hour and the clean-up is just as quick as well.

What do users think about the Wagner 590?
Of the 720 customer reviews submitted Wagner SprayTech scores a solid 4.5 from 5 which is really good. With all the amazing features it offers at a relatively affordable price it surely is a gem. From my own perspective, you won’t be able to paint your car with this but for fences and walls, it’s great, for furniture, also gives a fine finish once you take the time to work with the settings.

Wagner Flexio FAQ
What’s the difference between the Wagner Flexio 570 and 590 sprayer?
The main difference is that the 570 only has a 2-speed setting whereas Flexio 590 has a 10 setting additional speeds. These additional speed settings are useful as different brands of paint offer different viscosity, so the 590 is in my opinion the better of the two. However, if your painting needs are very basic and the finish quality isn’t a major requirement then the 570 will do you.
Can I use exterior latex paint?
Yes, this is no problem, you can spray exterior latex, topcoats, primers, and stains. While using paint straight from the can is perfectly ok thinning will make the paint go further. Thinning is dependent on the brand of paint as some have a heavier consistency than others, just don’t over-thin, start with 10 % water. It’s a good idea to use thinned paint for the first coat on previously unpainted timber and concrete or cement-based surfaces.

Conclusion
Wagner Spraytech Flexio 590 Spraying machine is the perfect paint tool you might be looking for. This is a well-built piece of equipment that would not be out of place in any workshop. I use one of these on a regular basis and have painted out-door fences and walls, plus some finer work on a speaker cabinet that produced excellent results. While best suited to DIY paint jobs It does however offer professional-grade painting.
Using the Flexio 590
Painting is never easy but with FLEXIO you can do it in a flash. Overall, Wagner Spraytech FLEXiO 590 is great for use both for experts and amateurs. But it is advised to know that before using it you must take some time to learn how to work with the flexio 590.
The best way to get started is to get hold of a large piece of cardboard or some other panel you can practice on using both the ispray nozzle setup and the detail finish nozzle setup.
Fill the painter with paint and practice by going through all the different settings. Take notes and determine the best finish you get with the different paints. You will find some settings create splatter finishes or get clogging problems but it can be easily overcome by experimenting with the different settings and paint thicknesses. Thinning thick latex paints will help, just take notes as all paints are different in many ways, you need to know what works best with your brand of paint.
At the end of the day, if you have the DIY creativity in you, you won’t face any issues with this product.
Setting The Power, The X-Boost Power Dial gives you control over the finish.
The power setting control is located on the main sprayer unit, the red dial with a 1 to 10 scale, with 10 being the most powerful. You will find that with the 590 set on number 10 you will go through the material in a flash, whereas on number 2, for example, you will hardly use any paint at all. For fences and walls, I would recommend a setting of around 6 or 7, this will still get plenty of material on the surface plus give you time to work it. Using a number 10 requires you to move fast as a lot of material is being distributed.
Detail Finish Nozzle
When using the detail sprayer/nozzle, lower settings are best as you;
- Need a finer spray for a good quality finish
- Use several thinner coats for a better finish
- Less paint flow gives more time for better accuracy
I recommend a setting from 2 – 4 when using the detail nozzle.
At the end of the day, if you have the DIY creativity in you, you won’t face any issues with this product
